We seek to understand the mechanisms by which the brain stores and retrieves memories of past events. This function is performed by a
neural circuit involving the hippocampal formation, yet we know little about the relationship between neural activity within this region and memory.
We will tackle this problem via a unique approach - studying the hippocampal formation in birds that naturally cache food items and use memory to recall
locations of these items later in time.
