New Optical Strategies to Dissect the Neural Basis of Perception
The brain encodes and processes information across space and time to generate perceptions and actions. The ability to reliably generate precise spatiotemporal sequences of neural activity would allow new forms of experimentation that could uncover the principles governing neural codes. While existing optogenetics techniques can control neural activity in either the temporal or spatial dimension, no technology allowed the simultaneous control of neural activity in both space and time. To address this technical gap, we developed and optimized a new approach to optically control neural activity with high resolution in both space and time over a cortical column in full 3D while simultaneously performing calcium imaging.
