A General Strategy for the Synthesis of Precision Sustainable Polymers with Main-Chain Functionalities from Renewable Resources
The use of synthetic polymers has revolutionized our daily life and industries, but the massive scale on which synthetic polymers are currently made from the petroleum-based feedstock has created serious environmental problems. While sustainable polymers generated from renewable feedstocks represent a promising solution, existing chemistry employed to generate sustainable polymers still remains poorly controlled, limiting them primarily as low-value bulk materials. In this proposal, we will develop a new platform technology for the synthesis of sustainable polymers with precisely controlled length, molecular structure of the backbone and side chain, and size distribution, thereby generating novel materials that can self-assemble, become elastic, or can be responsive to external stimuli.
