We aim to develop battery chemistries that use more abundant, less expensive, and better performing materials compared to the conventional Li-ion battery. We will target magnesium (Mg) and zinc (Zn) chemistries with a focus on understanding the diffusion of Mg2+ and Zn2+ cations in solids, a critical fundamental process during battery operation. By preparing new materials that support diffusion of divalent cations (2+) and characterizing their structure and electrochemistry, we aim to understand the fundamental properties that control diffusion of 2+ cations compared to the more conventional 1+ cations.
Arnold O. Beckman exemplifies the meaning of the word humanitarian. Combined with his unwavering enthusiasm for life, his keen sense of humor and his strong moral and ethical principles, he is a national icon.
