Bottom-up Synthesis of Structurally Precise Graphene Nanoribbons
Abstract:
The objective of this proposal is to synthesize structurally precise graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) using a bottom-up polymerization strategy. We recently achieved a major breakthrough in graphene nanoribbon synthesis that provides unprecedented control over GNR structure through chemical synthesis, ultimately allowing us to rationally design their structure. Our solution to this problem is distinct and different from other methods used in the past. Instead of employing subtractive, top-down approaches to pattern GNRs from larger species like graphite, large sheets of graphene, or nanotubes, we directly and precisely synthesize GNRs with pre-specified properties through a polymerization and polymer modification strategy.
