About the Exhibit

The Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, has a full exhibit which is dedicated to the lives of Dr. Arnold O. Beckman and his wife, Mabel. The contents of the exhibit shares about Arnold’s childhood in Cullom, Illinois, and touches on his career as an inventor and businessman, and the contributions he made to scientific research. The exhibit also explores the philanthropic activities and generosity of he and his wife, Mabel, whose work continues to have an impact on science and technology throughout the United States.

Notable objects and display stops in this exhibit include:

  • “Fourteen Weeks in Chemistry” by Joel Dorman Steele (near the South entrance)
  • The pH meter Arnold invented for a friend working in the citrus industry (on the Northeast side of the exhibit)
  • A copy of Dr. Beckman’s 90th birthday card, signed by five consecutive former U.S. presidents (on the East side of the exhibit)
  • “The Beckman” oxygen analyzer originally used in aircraft and submarines, then later in hospitals (on the southeast side of the exhibit)
  • Numerous inventions by Dr. Beckman and objects which tell the history of the Beckman Institute (throughout the 1st Floor)
