07 - Blood Parasite Prevalence and Diversity in Papua New Guinean Birds
San Francisco State University
This research focuses on the lineage diversity of blood parasites in birds from the islands of Papua New Guinea. We have identified the prevalence of several avian malaria parasites and analyzed the genetic sequences using molecular and phylogenetic techniques. We use this information to take a deeper look at the biogeographical distribution of parasite lineage diversity. This provides novel insight in disease dynamics of avian populations on islands, which will allow a better understanding of how these parasites spread.
