Title:
40 - Synthesis of Anti-Fouling Furan Derivatives

Institution:
Allegheny College

Department:
Biochemistry

Description:
Biofouling by marine organisms is a process that causes environmental and economic stress. Since the use of popular anti-fouling agents such as tributyltin (TBT) has been banned due to their toxicity, the search for environmentally benign alternatives has been a priority. Marine natural products have been targeted as a potential ecologically benign anti-foulants. Specifically, the synthesis of a naturally occurring sesquiterpene furan and its analogues using a highly functionalized sulfone reagent have been investigated and optimized.
