Cellular-Scale Bioelectronics: Exploring New Frontiers in Biology

Our ability to understand dynamic in-vivo cellular activity is limited by cumbersome tools that cannot scale to the large number of parallel measurement channels necessary for state-of-the-art research. This poster presents several building blocks and system demonstrations that outline a plausible path towards fully self-contained microsystems capable of interacting with cells at an individual level, and yet that be distributed across wide swaths of 3D anatomy for unprecedented access via many parallel channels. Specifically, energy-harvesting, sensing, and wireless communication building blocks are presented, followed by a proposal for cellular-scale bioelectronics and energy harvesting.
